German Knotted Blanket Stitch In Hand Embroidery Tutorial (Step By Step & Video)

By Fareeha Leave a Comment October 19, 2019

German Knotted Blanket Stitch is another variation of the blanket stitch family. If you know how to work a blanket stitch, then this will be just a breeze for you. Two blankets stitches are worked and a knot is made to tie them together. That is all there is to it.

What you will need?

  • Any fabric.
  • Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design) ( You can purchase a set of 6 hoops from Amazon for your basic needs.)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embroidery thread (You can buy this pack of 36 shades of the DMC embroidery floss.)

How many strands of floss do you need for making the German Knotted Blanket Stitch?

You can use all 6 strands of the floss. But if you are working on a finer design, then start with 2 strands of floss and increase the number of strands according to your design. I have used 6 strands of floss for this design.

Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the German Knotted Blanket Stitch

making double blanket stitches

1. Start by making 2 blanket stitches close to one another. Pass the needle under both the stitches as shown in the above picture.

2. Pull the thread in the upward direction to make a knot.

3. Continue working in a similar fashion by working 2 blanket stitches and looping them together till the end of the pattern.

Tips for working the Knotted Blanket Stitch

  • Use water-soluble ink as the stitches won’t cover the lines.
  • Knowing the blanket stitch will make this stitch easy.

What is this stitch used for?

  • This stitch can be used as a border decorative stitch on a motif or dress along with beads.
