Back Stitch In Hand Embroidery Tutorial (Step By Step & Video)

Back Stitch is another of the basic embroidery stitches that you should learn at the beginning like the running stitch. A strong durable backstitch will even eliminate the need for sewing in a machine too.

It is just backward stitch that you will be working from beneath the hoop. Essentially, it’s like driving a car backward. You move forward the line under the surface of your hoop. But on the surface of the fabric, your needle is moving backward.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED?

• Any fabric.
• Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design) ( You can purchase a set of 6 hoops from Amazon for your basic needs.)
• Tapestry needle
• Embroidery thread (You can buy this pack of 36 shades of the DMC embroidery floss.)

HOW MANY STRANDS OF FLOSS SHOULD I USE FOR MAKING THE BACK STITCH?

In basic embroidery patterns, you will need all 6 strands of floss.  But if you are making an outline for a pattern, you can start with 3 strands. You can also use normal thread if you want to mend your clothes.

Step by Step Photo process of working a back stitch

• Bring the needle up at point A as shown in the image above. Pull the thread up and take it down at your desired length at point B. This is just like a straight stitch.

• Once, we have made the straight stitch, it’s time to work on the back stitch from here. After taking the needle down at point B.

• bring the needle up again at desired length at point C from below.

• Take it down at point B again. You will work in reverse for this stitch.

• Work in the same way for the rest of the design. Bringing the needle up at desired length from below and taking down the thread at the precious stitch.

What is this stitch used for?

1. It is perfect for making all sorts of lines and outlines. You will find it very commonly used in most of the embroidery designs.
2. If you want to mend your torn clothes, then this is a perfect stitch for me. It is strong and doesn’t tear off easily.
3. The back stitch is generally not used as a filler for a pattern. But with little creativity, you can also add this stitch to fill your design.
