WHAT YOU WILL NEED?

  • Any fabric.
  • Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design) ( You can purchase a set of 6 hoops from Amazon for your basic needs.)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embroidery thread (You can buy this pack of 36 shades of the DMC embroidery floss.)

How many strands of floss do you need for making the threaded herringbone stitch?

You can use all 6 strands of the floss. But if you are working on a finer design, then start with 2 strands of floss and increase the number of strands according to your design.

Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the threaded herringbone stitch

starting on the herringbone stitch

1. First, you will have to work the herringbone stitch. Once you have worked the basic herringbone stitch, start by bringing the contrast color thread at the start of the herringbone stitch from beneath the fabric. Pull the thread up. Pass the needle from under the stitch as shown above.

2. Then, at the intersection, let the thread stay over it and pass from under the straight stitch as shown above

3. Work in a similar fashion till the end of the design by passing the needle under the stitches.

4. You can make the entire stitch in a similar fashion.

Tips for working the threaded herringbone stitch

  • It is difficult to hide lines with this stitch. I have drawn lines for easier understanding. As you master this stitch, avoid marking the lines.
  • You can also use vanishing ink especially used for this purpose if you can get it.

What is this stitch used for?

  • It can be used for filling the flowers or any patterns.
  • This stitch can be used as a beautiful border design.
