The name of the recipe is simple fish gravy recipe because we put all the ingredients with the fish and simply cook it. There is no elaborate procedure, and it is so very easy to make this simple gravy.

If you have the roasted cumin and fenugreek powder ready then everything else is just so easy. Most of the time I have the stock of the roasted cumin fenugreek powder. Though for some recipes I like to roast them fresh and grind them into a powder.

Freshly ground spices are far superior in flavor than store bought powders.

We have to add all the ingredients in the fish and let it cook till the fish is done. The best way for timing is cook on high heat till the green chili changes it’s color. After that, simmer till oil starts floating on top. Be careful not to stir the fish too much as it will easily break and fall apart.

Cleaning and Preparing the Fish: A Step Toward Culinary Excellence

Alright, let’s get hands-on and dive into the first step of our fish gravy adventure – cleaning and preparing the star of our dish: the fish itself. Properly handling and prepping the fish is the foundation of creating a delectable fish gravy that’s both satisfying and safe to savor. So, let’s roll up those sleeves and get started!

  1. Removing Scales: Begin by gently rinsing the fish under cold running water. Use a scaler or the back of a knife to scrape away the scales, working from the tail towards the head. This step not only helps in achieving a smoother texture but also prevents any unwanted crunch in your gravy.

  2. Gutting the Fish: Lay the fish on a clean cutting board, and using a sharp knife, make an incision along the belly, from the head to the tail. Carefully remove the entrails, taking care not to puncture any internal organs. Rinse the cavity thoroughly to ensure all traces of the gut are removed.

  3. Deboning (if Necessary): Depending on the type of fish you’ve chosen and your personal preference, you might want to debone it. To do this, make a clean cut along the backbone on one side, then gently lift and pull the bone away. Repeat the process on the other side. If there are smaller pin bones left, use tweezers to remove them for a seamless dining experience.

  4. Rinsing and Patting Dry: Give the fish one final rinse to ensure there are no lingering scales or debris. After rinsing, gently pat it dry with paper towels. A dry surface allows for better absorption of flavors during the cooking process.

Remember, taking your time during this phase is crucial. It’s a labor of love that ensures the final dish is a culinary masterpiece. Plus, mastering the art of cleaning and prepping fish opens up a world of culinary possibilities beyond this recipe.

With your fish cleaned, scaled, and ready for action, you’ve conquered the first step in our fish gravy journey. Now, let’s move on to the next exciting phase: creating the flavor base that will infuse your dish with a burst of aromatic goodness. Get ready to awaken your senses and let the magic unfold!

  1. Can I use frozen fish for this recipe?

Absolutely! While using fresh fish is ideal, frozen fish can also work well. Make sure to thaw it completely in the refrigerator before starting the cleaning and preparation process.

  2. What type of fish is best for fish gravy?

You have a world of options! Both flaky white fish and flavorful varieties like salmon work wonderfully. Choose based on your taste preferences and what’s available locally.

  3. How do I prevent the fish from falling apart in the gravy?

To keep the fish intact, handle it gently while cleaning and cooking. If the fish has delicate flesh, you can marinate it briefly before cooking to help it hold its shape.

  4. Can I customize the spice level?

Absolutely! This recipe is your canvas. Adjust the spices according to your heat tolerance and flavor preferences.

  5. Should I remove the bones from the fish?

It depends on your preference. If you prefer boneless fish, you can carefully debone it following the instructions provided. Leaving the bones in can add flavor, but make sure to warn diners if they need to be mindful while eating.

  6. Can I make the fish gravy ahead of time?

Certainly! Fish gravy can be prepared in advance and reheated before serving. However, fish tends to lose its texture upon reheating, so try to avoid overcooking it during the initial preparation.

  7. What can I serve with fish gravy?

Fish gravy pairs beautifully with rice, bread, or even steamed vegetables. The choice is yours!

  8. Can I use coconut milk to thicken the gravy?

Yes, you can use coconut milk to add richness and depth to the gravy. Add it at the simmering stage and adjust the quantity according to your preference.

  9. How do I prevent the fish gravy from becoming too spicy?

If you’re concerned about the spiciness, start by adding a smaller amount of chili powder or omit it altogether. You can always adjust the seasoning as the gravy simmers.

  10. Can I freeze leftover fish gravy?

While it’s best to consume the fish gravy fresh, you can freeze leftovers. Keep in mind that the fish’s texture might change slightly upon thawing and reheating.
