Ring Knot is a variation of the french knot. This stitch is worked pretty much like the french knot but the thread is looser to form rings.

What you will need?

  • Any fabric.
  • Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design) ( You can purchase a set of 6 hoops from Amazon for your basic needs.)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embroidery thread (You can buy this pack of 36 shades of the DMC embroidery floss.)

How many strands of floss do you need for making the Ring Knot?

You can use all 6 strands of the floss. But if you are working on a finer design, then start with 2 strands of floss and increase the number of strands according to your design. I have used all 6 strands of floss for this design.

Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the Ring Knot

1. starting on the ring knot

1. Start by bringing the thread up the fabric from below.

2. looping the thread around the needle

2. Loop the thread around the needle twice.

3. Do not hold the thread tightly like the french knot. Let it loose to form small rings and insert the needle below just beside where you brought it up.

3. pulling the needle down the fabric

4. While holding the rings, pull the needle down.

4. ring knot stitch

5. Keep working on the knots in a similar fashion to finish the design.

Tips for working the Ring Knot

  • Do not tighten the thread around the needle. Letting it loose will just finish this stitch like the french knot.

What is this stitch used for?

  • This stitch can be used in place of the french knots.
  • Beautiful flowers can be made with the ring knots.
  • It can be a great filling stitch too.
