Ray Stitch is also known as the Fan Stitch, Straight Fan or the Fancy Fan Stitch. This is part of the straight stitch family. The ray stitch is made using a series of straight stitches to form a fan or a ray.
What you will need?
- Any fabric.
- Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design) ( You can purchase a set of 6 hoops from Amazon for your basic needs.)
- Tapestry needle
- Embroidery thread (You can buy this pack of 36 shades of the DMC embroidery floss.)
How many strands of floss do you need for making the Ray Stitch?
You can use all 6 strands of the floss. But if you are working on a finer design, then start with 2 strands of floss and increase the number of strands according to your design. I have used all 2 strands of floss for this design. (Adderall)
Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the Ray Stitch
1. Make a diamond shape on the fabric for easier working. Bring the needle from below the fabric at point A and take it to the middle of the diamond at point B. Take the needle down and pull the thread.
2. Bring it up at point C.
Again, insert from point B to point D.
3. Keep working on either side of the pattern, always bringing at the center point B. That is, E-B, F-B, G-B, H-B, I-B.
Tips for working the Ray Stitch
- Use water-soluble ink as the stitches won’t cover the lines.
- You can also mark dots to avoid the lines.
What is this stitch used for?
- This stitch can be used as a pattern in itself. With french knots or beads along the edges, this can make a beautiful design.
