By Fareeha Leave a Comment November 6, 2019

Palestrina Stitch is a beautiful stitch that looks beautiful when worked on. You can find a similar stitch, Basque knot, that belongs to this stitch family. This is also known as the double knot stitch.

What you will need?

  • Any fabric.
  • Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design) ( You can purchase a set of 6 hoops from Amazon for your basic needs.)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embroidery thread (You can buy this pack of 36 shades of the DMC embroidery floss.)

How many strands of floss do you need for making the Palestrina Stitch?

You can use all 6 strands of the floss. But if you are working on a finer design, then start with 2 strands of floss and increase the number of strands according to your design. I have used all 6 strands of floss for this design.

Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the Palestrina Stitch

starting the palestrina stitch

1. We will work this stitch on a curved line. Start by bringing the thread up at point A on the line. Then, insert from point B to point C. This stitch is just a small stitch with the line in between.

2. Pull the thread up. You will notice that a small stitch must have formed. We will work on this stitch for the knots.

3. Insert the needle through this stitch without piercing the fabric. Pull up the thread.

4. Again, pass the needle through the stitch for the second time. This time, when you pull the thread from in between the thread to form a knot now.

5. Continue with the rest of the pattern in a similar way.

Tips for working the Double Knot Stitch

  • When you work the first knot, the thread would be under the needle and when the second knot is worked, a knot will be formed.
  • Remember to keep a short gap between the stitches.

What is this stitch used for?

  • You can use this as a beautiful border design.
