Basque Knot in Hand Embroidery Tutorial (Step By Step & Video)

By Fareeha Leave a Comment November 2, 2019

Basque Knot is also known as the Knotted Loop Stitch or the Knotted Pearl Stitch. Though it is called as the Basque Knot, it belongs to the Palestrina Stitches Family. Though it looks strikingly similar to the Palestrina Stitch, this stitch is a bit different in nature. It is not to be confused with the Basque Stitch either which belongs to the chain stitch family.

What you will need?

  • Any fabric.
  • Embroidery hoop, 15cm (6″) (Bigger if you are working on a larger design) ( You can purchase a set of 6 hoops from Amazon for your basic needs.)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Embroidery thread (You can buy this pack of 36 shades of the DMC embroidery floss.)

How many strands of floss do you need for making the Basque Knot?

You can use all 6 strands of the floss. But if you are working on a finer design, then start with 2 strands of floss and increase the number of strands according to your design. I have used all 6 strands of floss for this design.

Step by Step Pictorial Process of making the Basque Knot

starting on the basque knot

1. I have worked this on 2 parallel lines. Bring the thread up in the middle of the lines at point A. Pull the thread up and insert the needle from point B on line 1 to point C on line 2. Pull the thread.

2. You will notice that a diagonal stitch must have formed from point A to Point B. take the needle underneath this stitch as shown in the above picture. Pull the thread to form a knot.

looping the knot

3. Again, take the needle underneath this stitch to form another loop. Pull the thread by forming a knot like you would in a chain stitch.

continuing with the basque knot

4. Keep working in a similar fashion till the end of the pattern.

Tips for working the Basque Knot

  • You can avoid drawing the lines as you get confident with this stitch, as it is difficult to hide it.

What is this stitch used for?

  • You can use this as a beautiful border with embellishments.
