Potatoes can be made with a variety of combinations with other vegetables. Or they can even be made with mutton. They made a great combination and the flavor is enhanced too when it is mixed with other veggies or non veg.
In today’s recipe, I have made the potato with peas or matar as it is called in Hindi. It is a great combination and is pretty famous in India. You will see a lot of variations of this aloo matar curry being made in different homes.
What I am presenting is how I make it at my home. This is the style that I make for most of my curries.
Made with the everyone’s favorite veggies, this aloo matar curry recipe will be wiped off the plate. You can serve it as a side dish with both the roti and the rice. It tastes just as perfect with anything.
You can make the curry more thinner by adding water while serving with roti. But if you are serving as a side dish with rice, then you can keep it little thicker. Or you can keep mix the thinner version along with rice.
Depending upon where you stay and how you get the peas, you can use the frozen or the fresh peas. But if you find the fresh peas easily, then definitely make this aloo matar curry recipe with the fresh matar. The dish tastes best with the fresh peas.
In my home, my son and the little one love the matar. And hence, this aloo matar curry recipe is made pretty often. I am surprised that I haven’t posted more matar recipes on my blog. In sha ALLAH, you will see more of them soon. As I don’t get to click many of the dishes that get cooked at home.
The recipe that gets posted today might have been clicked a month ago. But I try to post the seasonal recipes on time. Or else there is no point in posting a mango recipe after the mango season is gone.
But the recipes like aloo matar curry recipe have no season and I have the luxury to post them whenever I get time. That is one of the main advantages of posting such recipes. And such dishes get made pretty often at home too.
You can make this on stove top in a pan or just pressure cook the potatoes for faster cooking.

Aloo Matar Curry recipe, Potato Peas Curry
- 2 tbsp oil
- 2 onion finely sliced
- 2 tsp ginger garlic paste
- 2 to matoes finely chopped
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 4 potatoes medium sized, peeled and cubed
- 2 cups fresh / frozen peas
- salt to taste
- Heat oil in a pan or pressure cooker. Fry onion till translucent.
- Add the ginger garlic paste and fry till the raw smell vanishes from it.
- Throw in the tomatoes and cook till soft and pulpy.
- Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and add some water to prevent burning the masala.
- Stir and add potatoes. Add water and cook till the potatoes are almost done.
- Add in the peas and cook till they are done. The peas get cooked very fast. If you are using pressure cooker, use it only for cooking potatoes.
- Mix in the salt and serve hot with roti or rice.
